“I want to fly,” says a little mole, no bigger than an oak leaf. But moles live underground – and everyone knows that moles cannot fly. Even his mother tells him so. Yet the little mole’s desire is so strong that he decides to become an “Earth Bird” and sets out to make his impossible dream come true.
Based on the children’s book by Oliver Scherz and Eva Muggenthaler, Der kleine Erdvogel is a poetic, playful and humorous story about longing, dreams, determination and the power of imagination.
On stage, Maike Jansen and Stefan Ferencz of pohyb’s und konsorten bring the story to life through a highly physical and imaginative theatrical language. Moving rapidly between different characters, the two performers combine mime, gesture, physical theatre, slapstick, clowning, sounds and music, using only a handful of costumes and props.
The simplicity of the staging leaves plenty of space for the audience’s imagination. Moments of quiet poetry alternate with comic situations, mishaps, falls and unexpected flights, creating a lively and engaging theatrical journey for children and adults alike.
At the heart of The Little Earth Bird is a simple but powerful idea: what seems impossible can become possible when we have the courage to imagine beyond the limits others set for us.
A tender and funny piece of theatre that encourages young audiences to believe in their dreams, follow their curiosity and discover their own way of taking flight.
