We were birds

The multi-genre production directed by the author uses puppets and live actors, as well as authentic live music, to bring to life a world that processes and unites several origin stories of the Gypsy people, in which we can witness a teenage boy’s search for his way and his coming of age. “Everyone has parents!” – The performance is the story of Lurkó, a fourteen-year-old teenage boy living in state care, who has a burning desire to find his own family, his own roots. His foster father tries to make a man out of him with slaps, which he starts to rebel against and sets off. Anywhere, anywhere, just away from here… His path leads through a forest, where an old gypsy woman tells him the true story of the gypsies. As a result, he realizes that he must seek his goal and the path to it within himself. Following the compass in his heart, he sets out to become a skinny gypsy man like his father. He reaches the realm of the Sun and the Moon – the goddesses of luck and misfortune – so that upon his return he can not only govern his own life, but also be able to pass on the truth of his ancestors. The purpose of the performance is to strengthen his own identity, to encourage the acceptance of other cultural identities, and to motivate (positive) communication between Roma and non-Roma people. Written and directed by: András Tamás Szegedi Performers: Dóra Varga, Ernő Babindák, István Babindák
