SPARSE - Supporting and Promoting Arts in Rural Settlements of Europe - fosters rural touring in the partner countries taking performances by professional performing arts companies and artists into rural areas to rural audiences in local community venues. Within the project, 60 shows will be organized in 4 partner areas over 3 annual touring periods in 20 spaces of the local community.

SPARSE involves professional performing arts companies and artists. They are selected by the partners, from within their own country, and offered to local promoters to choose from through a ‘menu’ on the basis of criteria which makes them appropriate for rural touring: the kind and the content of the show and how it can relate to the local audience, the capacity to tour with all the necessary equipment and technical skills, the fee they charge and the commitment to reaching a new, rural audience.

SPARSE brings together rural areas from Estonia, Italy, Lithuania and Romania. Currently a rural touring structure does not exist within the partner countries so Take Art (Somerset, England, UK) as lead partner, with a number of associate partners with specific expertise in rural touring from Norway, Sweden, and Cornwall, developed the basis of a Capacity Building Programme to implement and pilot a rural touring network in new areas. The venue is usually a village hall, church, school or community centre. It need not be state-of-the-art, though it does need some basic facilities (toilets, heating, lighting etc).

The promoter is usually a group of volunteers or organisation within each local community which takes responsibility for promoting the show, from choosing the artist, booking the venue, publicising the event, selling tickets, liaising with the performers and running the event on the night.

In the website diary we’ll collect audience comments and photographs, here you’ll find the story of the project through the eyes of the partners and the participants.
